iPhone carrier update has been released via iTunes, now you can update it on your computer.
If you start your iTunes and connect your iPhone, you would most probably get this message:
If you can’t get this message, you can do it manually, just click on the “Check for Update†button within the Version area on the Summary tab of iTunes. That’s it!
Should you update it right now? Oh, it all depends. If you are on a unlocked or jailbroken iPhone, I suggest you not updated right now, wait for several days and see if it the proper time to update.
Apple gives us an explanation about this update, here it is:
iTunes 7.7 and later has the ability to update the carrier specific settings on iPhone with iPhone 2.0 software or later. Carrier settings updates are small files (about 10k) that are downloaded from iTunes to be installed on your iPhone. The carrier settings can include updates to the default APN (how iPhone accesses the carrier’s cellular data network), special dialing codes at Settings > Phone > [Carrier] Services, default settings for Stocks, Maps, Weather, and other items.
To check if a carrier settings update is available for your iPhone, do the the following:
1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection on your computer and you have iTunes 7.7 or later.
2. Connect iPhone to the computer and open iTunes.
3. If a carrier setting update is available, you will see the above screen.
Note: None of European, Candian nor Indian customers are reporting this update screen.
Keep one thing in mind, though, that most iPhone updates hinder the operations of existing iPhone unlock tools, so you might want to skip it –until further notice– if you have an unlocked iPhone.
So iPhone carrier update may be not for you now, just keep an eye on that.
